Pre-employment checks

There are six types of pre-employment checks that may be required, depending on the job you have been offered, before you start your new appointment. The pre-employment checks we require will be stated in your conditional offer letter.

We aim to complete all your pre-employment checks within 20 days from you receiving your conditional offer letter. Below are the pre-employment checks and tips on how you can help us speed up your checks.

Identity check

We need to verify your identity by asking you to produce identity documents when you attend your identity check appointment.

Tip: Book your ID appointment as soon as possible.

Right to work in the UK

We need to confirm that you do have the right to work in the UK. If you don’t have permission to work in the UK, then you will need to get permission to work under Tier 2 of the UK visa and immigration system.

Tip: Make sure you bring the correct right to work documentation with you to your ID appointment

Professional registration and qualification checks

For some positions in the Trust, such as staff nurse, require you to hold professional registration. We will verify your registration online with the relevant membership body.

Tip: Check your professional registration you provided on your application is correct.

We will also need to verify you have the necessary skills and qualifications for the position you have been offered. At your ID appointment please bring with you originals of the qualifications required for the position, as stated in the person specification.

Tip: Check the personal specification for the role and bring your qualifications with you to your ID appointment

Employment history and reference checks

We need to obtain references to cover your previous three years of employment or training. We require a confirmation of employment reference (factual reference) which is usually requested from your previous organisations HR / Personnel Department or equivalent.

If you are joining from another NHS Trust we only require one reference covering a minimum period of one year.

Tip: Please provide contact details for your previous organisations HR / Personnel departments, if you haven’t already as part of your application.

Disclosure and Barring Service

Some positions in the Trust will require you to have a criminal record 'Disclosure and Barring Service' (DBS) check. This is usually if your position involves working / close contact with vulnerable people.

If you require a DBS check this will be stated on your conditional offer letter and be provide with a link to complete your DBS application. You will be asked to provide details of ALL names you have used since birth and ALL addresses you have lived at over the past 5 years (including full postcodes). It is important that you also include temporary addresses such as student accommodation.

Your DBS application will only be submitted once we have seen your original ID documentation at your ID appointment.

Tip: Complete DBS application as soon as possible and attend your ID appointment.

Work health assessment

The Occupational Health Department will carry out an assessment of your fitness to undertake the position you have been offered. You will be sent a link with your conditional offer letter to complete an online assessment. You will also need to complete a Work Health Assessment form which you need to send to our Occupational Health department.

Tip: If your role involves you having close patient contact, please make sure you have evidence of your vaccination history and submit these with your Work Health Assessment form.
