Marble Hill 1 gastroenterology

Marble Hill 1 is an acute medical ward that specialises in gastroenterology—conditions that affect the stomach, intestines, liver, gall bladder, biliary tree and pancreas. Many of the patients we care for are very sick or elderly and require multiple investigations and constant monitoring. Patients are admitted from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Acute Medical Unit (AMU), endoscopy and outpatients departments.

Things to consider

Nurses usually work 12-hour shifts starting at 7:45am and 8:15pm. At the beginning of each shift, nurses are allocated to patients they will be caring for. Your nurse will introduce him or herself. Your doctors will also introduce themselves upon your first meeting, which may be during a ward round that usually begins at around 9:30am.

Your nurse will then plan the care with you so that you know what to expect. They will confirm what medications or other treatments you have been prescribed, and any investigations that you will undergo, and can answer any questions you have.

Your doctor will be in the ward from 9am–5pm from Mon–Fri. After 5pm and on the weekends, you will have on-call doctors. All updates and discussions regarding patient care are in the afternoon (face-to-face or phone call updates) and this should be requested by patients and relatives.

Patients who are ready to be discharged who are awaiting care plans or for social issues to be resolved may be transferred to the Discharge Ready Unit.
