Blood tests (phlebotomy)

New: We have temporarily suspended our online booking system. All patients are now advised to attend as walk-ins. Any existing appointments will be honoured. Please see 'Our Service' section for more information.

What we do

Our phlebotomy services at both hospitals use blood tests to assess the general health of our patients, confirm the presence of a bacterial or viral infection, see how well organs are functioning and to screen for genetic conditions.

We provide an outpatients service for patients referred to us by their GPs and also within our hospital clinics.

Our Service

We run a walk-in service at both hospital sites Mon–Fri, 8am–4:30pm. Please note GP referrals will only be accepted at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

Due to busy clinics in the morning, we advise patients to attend in the afternoons and toward the end of the week (Weds-Fri) when the waiting times are usually shorter as we do not operate on an appointment system except for Glucose Tolerance Tests (GTTs).

During busy periods we may stop issuing tickets at 4pm and ask you to return on another day.

Booked Appointments:

We have temporarily suspended our appointment booking system. All patients (hospital and GP) may now walk-in and use the queueing system. Any existing appointments will still go ahead but there will not be any new appointments available to book.

Children's Blood Tests

For children’s blood tests, please refer to the paediatrics department on the following telephone number: 020 3315 2019

Attending your blood test

The phlebotomy department is located on the Lower Ground Floor at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and on the Ground floor at West Middlesex Hospital.

Instructions for your visit:

• Wear clothing that gives easy access to your arm (eg short sleeves or sleeves that can be rolled up)
• Please adhere to social distancing guidelines in the waiting area and wear a mask
• Please attend alone unless you require a carer or translator
• On arrival, please collect a ticket and wait to be called

The majority of blood tests do not require any special requirements before attending. If your doctor has requested a specific test that requires you to do certain things before coming to the department (eg not to eat anything for a certain number of hours), the doctor will let you know what you need to do before attending your blood test.

If you or a member in your household have any COVID-19 symptoms, please do not visit the hospital. You need to reschedule your appointment at least 2 weeks after symptoms have developed. Staff follow strict infection control procedures to keep you safe. We aim to see all patients with 30 minutes of their arrival time.

GP referrals (Chelsea and Westminster Hospital only)

Please ensure that you have that you bring a paper copy of your blood test request form with you. We will be unable to take or process your blood without this form. We are unable to print your request at the hospital.

We regret that we have temporarily suspended the online booking system and all patients should attend as walk-ins. We will continue to accept any patients that have already booked an appointment.
