Adult blood tests (phlebotomy)

New for Chelsea and Westminster Hospital only: Book your blood test online OR via phone —see 'your appointment' below

What we do

Our phlebotomy services at both hospitals use blood tests to assess the general health of our patients, confirm the presence of a bacterial or viral infection, see how well organs are functioning and to screen for genetic conditions.

We provide an outpatients service for patients referred to us by their GPs and also within our hospital clinics.

How to arrange your appointment

West Middlesex Hospital

We run a walk-in service at West Middlesex Mon–Fri, 8am–4:30pm. This service is only available to hospital patients (no outside or GP requests)

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital

We run a walk-in service at Chelsea and Westminster Mon–Fri, 8am–4:30pm.

Patients at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital can also book an appointment online or by phone (0204 538 7474) in order to avoid delays. We regret that this service is not available at West Middlesex Hospital.

From 1 June 2021 patients referred via GP for blood test at Chelsea and Westminster must book an appointment and will not be accepted as walk-ins. We regret that we will not be able to accept any GP requests without a booked appointment from 1 June onwards. This GP service is also only available at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

Patients referred via hospital clinics may use the walk-in or booking service.

Children's Blood Tests

For children’s blood tests, please refer to the paediatrics department on the following telephone number: 020 3315 2019.

Your appointment

The phlebotomy department is located on the Lower Ground Floor at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and on the Ground floor at West Middlesex Hospital.

  • Wear clothing that gives easy access to your arm (eg short sleeves or sleeves that can be rolled up)
  • Please arrive no earlier than 5 minutes before your appointment time
  • Please adhere to social distancing guidelines in the waiting area and wear a mask
  • Please attend alone unless you require a carer or translator
  • On arrival, please collect a ticket and wait to be called
  • If you cannot make your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible so that the appointment can be made available to another person
  • If you have been sent by your GP, please ensure you have a paper copy of the request form

The majority of blood tests do not require any special requirements before attending. If your doctor has requested a specific test that requires you to do certain things before coming to the department (eg not to eat anything for a certain number of hours), the doctor will let you know what you need to do before attending your blood test.

If you or a member in your household have any COVID-19 symptoms, please do not visit the hospital. You need to reschedule your appointment at least 2 weeks after symptoms have developed. Staff follow strict infection control procedures to keep you safe. We aim to see all patients with 30 minutes of their arrival time.

GP referrals (Chelsea and Westminster Hospital only)

We do not run a GP service at West Middlesex Hospital. However, patients are welcome to book an appointment to be seen at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

Please ensure that you have booked an appointment online or via telephone (0204 538 7474) and that you bring a paper copy of your blood test request form with you. We will be unable to take or process your blood without this form. We are unable to print your request at the hospital.

From 1 June 2021 patients referred via GP for blood test must book an appointment. We regret that we will not be able to accept any GP requests without a booked appointment from 1 June onwards.
