Healthcare assistants provide basic health care to patients, promoting their independence and well-being. They assist with personal care tasks such as washing, toileting, serving meals, and helping patients with their daily activities. Healthcare assistants also undertake a wide range of clinical skills including observations, venepuncture and cannulation, ECGs and more.

The Trainee Nursing Associate (TNA) training programme is designed to bridge the gap between healthcare assistants and registered nurses. The TNA programme is a two-year training course that combines both theoretical and practical learning. Trainees work towards progression into a Band 4 Nursing Associate role upon successful completion of the programme. The training includes a mix of classroom-based learning and hands-on clinical experience, allowing trainees to apply their knowledge in real-world healthcare settings.

Registered Nursing Associates are NMC-registered professionals who provide hands-on, person-centred care, working as part of the nursing team and the wider multidisciplinary team. Their responsibilities include performing clinical observations such as monitoring blood pressure, glucose levels, pulse, temperature and respiratory activity.

The Student Degree Nursing Programme is a three-year university-delivered programme including both classroom-based learning and hands-on clinical experience. Students are taught a wide range of subjects including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and nursing ethics. They also gain practical skills through clinical placements in various healthcare settings such as hospitals, community health centres and nursing homes. Student Degree Nurses are responsible for treating and caring for patients' needs under the supervision of a registered professional. In addition to clinical tasks, Student Degree Nurses perform routine nursing duties such as blood pressure checks, ECGs, suture and clip removal and providing lifestyle advice.
