Industry

The Trust recognises the important benefits that our investigators and patients can realise through our commercial collaborations.

Recently, we have seen an increase in the number of non-HIV related commercial studies hosted by the Trust, with wide engagement across many specialties.

This drives our Board level endorsed strategy.

We are keen to develop successful collaborations with industry, through acting as a research site for commercially sponsored research studies, or through leveraging commercial funding to develop investigator-led research for mutual benefit.

Industry service

We have a commercial research specialist within the department who facilitates the initial selection processes and set up, including contract and budget negotiation, and on-going performance management of our commercial portfolio.

Patient cohorts

At Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, we passionately believe that all patients have the right to participate in relevant research studies. Our patient population is one of the most diverse in the country enabling a targeted approach to treatment development with the demographic it aims to serve.

Research areas

Our extensive research portfolio (commercial and non-commercial) reflects the various clinical service areas actively used by patients,  including cardiology, diabetes, dermatology, obstetrics, oncology, paediatrics and respiratory medicine to name a few.

Research facilities

There are a range of facilities with established techniques and protocols available to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust academics, researchers and industry collaborators.

We have two well-equipped Clinical Research Facilities at St Stephen’s Centre and Lakeside Mental Health Unit which allow us to deliver studies at various phases, including ‘first in man’ studies.

Workforce

Our Consultant Principal Investigators and Chief Investigators are involved in a wide range of research activities and are recognised leaders in their field.

We have a centralised, highly-trained, flexible Research Delivery workforce comprised of consultants, research fellows, research nurses, midwives and assistants who support the delivery of the research portfolio.

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Research Department is experienced in delivering research led by investigators, industry and NIHR portfolio collaborations.

Active research studies

The Trust hosts a wide range of research studies funded by a variety of sponsors including National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), UK research councils, European funding agencies, research charities and industry. However, we do have studies sponsored by the Trust’s own charity and affiliates such as CW+ and BORNE.

We have some exciting studies in planning that will further our knowledge in Covid-19 treatment and prevention (PREG-COV, Vaccine Boosters), investigate the accuracy of innovative diagnostic platform devices and AI in confirming diagnoses.
