Respiratory medicine

What we do

A comprehensive respiratory service is provided for all inpatients and outpatients across both Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital.  We treat the following conditions:

  • Asthma
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Interstitial lung diseases
  • Lung cancer
  • Lung nodules
  • Respiratory failure
  • Respiratory infections including TB
  • Sleep-disordered breathing
  • Stop smoking service

Outpatient services include: general respiratory clinics (including provision for military patients), joint multi-disciplinary lung cancer clinic with oncology, palliative care and thoracic surgery in-put, TB clinic, COPD clinic, sleep & ventilation clinic, Covid follow-up clinic and post (Long) Covid clinics. These are supported on-site by a lung function lab and Quit Smoking services.

The respiratory team looks after admitted patients on a designated ward located near acute assessment areas (AAU/AMU) with capability to provide inpatient non-invasive ventilation with close links to the Intensive Care Unit. Specialist Respiratory Nurses provide care in asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lung cancer and tuberculosis.
