Trainee Specialist Midwife

Development

This role serves as a pathway to Band 7 Specialist Midwife positions. Successful completion of the training and demonstration of required competencies are essential for progression.

Specialist Midwife

(eg Multiple Pregnancy, Breech Specialist)

Specialist Midwives provide advanced clinical care and expertise in specific areas such as multiple pregnancies, breech presentations, perinatal mental health or safeguarding. They support complex case management, develop clinical guidelines and offer training and support to other healthcare professionals to enhance service quality.​

Development

These roles require significant clinical experience and additional training or qualifications relevant to the specialty area. Specialist Midwives are expected to engage in continuous professional development and may pursue further education to support their specialist practice.

Shift Lead

(eg Labour Ward Coordinator)

Shift Leads are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of maternity units during their shifts. They ensure safe staffing levels, coordinate patient care, manage resources and provide leadership to the clinical team to maintain high standards of care.​

Development

Individuals in these roles typically have extensive clinical experience and have demonstrated leadership abilities. Development pathways may include leadership training programmes, mentorship and engagement in quality improvement initiatives. Continuous professional development is vital to maintain effective leadership and clinical skills.

Consultant Midwife

Consultant Midwives are senior clinical leaders who provide expert advice, influence policy and drive innovation in maternity services. They focus on complex care, research, education and service development, ensuring that maternity care is evidence-based and person-centred. Their role often includes strategic leadership within multidisciplinary teams and contributing to national and local policy initiatives.​

Progression to a Consultant Midwife role typically requires substantial clinical experience, advanced academic qualifications (such as a Master's or Doctorate), and demonstrated leadership in clinical practice, research and education.
