John Hunter Clinic (JHC)

John Hunter Clinic (JHC) is a Sexual Health Clinic, based next to Chelsea and Westminster NHS Hospital, offering sexual health and contraception services.

Please note there will be temporary changes to the John Hunter Clinic from 7–10 November due to an important IT upgrade:

  • Saturday 7 November: All services will be closed.
  • Monday 9 November: Routine services will be closed, but Emergency Contraception and PEP will still be available.
  • Tuesday 10 November: Services will begin reopening from 12pm.

If you are a medical patient with a booked appointment, your appointment will go ahead as planned.

During the IT upgrade, our clinic teams will unfortunately be unable to access or provide test results or book appointments. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience while we complete this important work.

Gonorrhoea vaccine

John Hunter Clinic offers the gonorrhoea vaccine (MenB). We encourage patients to receive the vaccine at upcoming routine appointments where eligible.

How to access our services

If you do not have symptoms

If you need:

  • A routine sexual health screen
  • General contraception (pills, patches or rings)

Sexual Health London (SHL) offers free home STI testing kits and contraception by home delivery.

If suitable, a free testing kit will be sent to you. You collect your own samples and return them by post. Results are typically available within a few days.

If you would like contraception, SHL can arrange delivery to your home or collection from pharmacies across London. SHL provides regular and emergency contraception to people aged 16 and over.

Please do not pass urine for at least one hour before your appointment.

We offer a range of sexual health and contraception appointments.

Please note:

  • We offer a limited number of sexual health appointments in advance
  • New appointments for symptomatic patients or those needing treatment are released daily after 8:30am
  • We are closed on Wednesday mornings, weekends and bank holidays

You can book appointments for:

  • HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)
  • General contraception (pills, patches and rings)
  • Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) – coils or implants
  • General sexual health appointments

Same-day care

If you:

  • Need HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)
  • Need emergency contraception, or
  • Are aged 17 or under

Please walk in and you will be seen on the same day. Note that we are closed on Wednesday mornings, weekends and bank holidays.

If you need HIV PEP outside our opening hours, please go to your nearest A&E.

For emergency contraception outside clinic hours, please contact your local pharmacy.

About our clinic

  • We do not routinely test for Mycoplasma genitalium (Mgen) in people without symptoms, in line with national guidance
  • We do not provide cervical smears, HPV testing or breast examinations
  • Bicycles and electric scooters cannot be accommodated in the clinic
  • Pets are not allowed, but guide dogs and assistance animals are welcome

  • Testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Treatment of other genital conditions (e.g. thrush, bacterial vaginosis, skin conditions)
  • Full range of contraceptive services, including implants and coils (IUD), as part of integrated sexual health care
  • Emergency and general contraception, including long-acting reversible methods
  • Sexual Health Adviser service offering advice and wellbeing support
  • Follow-up care for people living with HIV
  • HPV and mpox vaccinations for men who have sex with men (if eligible)
  • Hepatitis A, B and C screening and Hepatitis A and B vaccinations for at-risk individuals
  • Risk-reduction advice and signposting
  • HIV Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) following sexual exposure
  • HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), including advice and monitoring
  • SWISH – service for sex workers
  • All results are sent by SMS

Specialist services (by referral)

  • Anoscopy
  • Prostatitis clinic (for men)
  • Female Complex Clinic (for women with complex sexual health needs)
  • Psychology service to support sexual wellbeing
  • Club Drug Clinic – support for people who want to change their recreational drug use
  • Complex contraception and ultrasound-guided clinics (for people unable to feel or locate a coil or implant)

Contraception and family planning

Emergency contraception can reduce the risk of pregnancy after unprotected sex and must be used within five days. Most pharmacies offer emergency contraception.

We provide a wide range of contraception options for women or people with a cervix attending our services, including:

  • Short-acting methods: Combined pill, progestogen-only pill, vaginal ring and patch
  • Long-acting methods: Contraceptive injection, implants and hormonal or non-hormonal coils (eg Mirena or copper)

If you are interested in an implant or coil, please book into a Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) clinic. These clinics are extremely busy and late arrival may require rebooking. Coil insertion may not be possible if there has been a risk of pregnancy within the previous three weeks.

If you need the pill, patch or vaginal ring, you can book a general family planning appointment or use SHL.
