Anaesthetic services (children)

What we do

At Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, we provide a full range of anaesthetic care for newborns, infants and children. We support a wide range of elective (planned) and emergency operations, including surgery on premature and very young babies. We also provide anaesthesia for children undergoing burns surgery and imaging investigations, including CT scans, MRI scans and X-rays.

Our pain service for children is consultant-led. Our anaesthetists work closely with the children's pre-assessment unit to ensure that patients with complex medical needs are thoroughly assessed and prepared before surgery. We also provide vital support to the children's High Dependency Unit for children who need assistance with their breathing following surgery, and to A&E for the stabilisation of seriously ill children.

Sharing our expertise and skills is important to us. We are one of the main teaching centres in London for doctors wishing to develop their skills and competence in children's anaesthesia.

Our team

Our team comprises 11 consultant anaesthetists with specialist expertise in children's anaesthesia. We operate an on-call rota to ensure that a specialist is always available for children requiring an anaesthetic, at any time of day or night. Our team is led by Dr Peter Brooke.
