Ward Manager

The Ward Manager is accountable and responsible for the delivery and management of care within the ward or area of work. They supervise staff and students, ensuring high standards of patient care are maintained. They also provide professional nursing leadership and guidance, offer clinical advice and undertake management and monitoring activities. In addition to their clinical duties, Ward Managers are involved in service development and the enhancement of patient care within their specialty. They develop confidence and competence in adapting to the changing demands of the role and environment while leading and coordinating a team. Ward Managers also contribute to the wider support and development of staff safety, person-centred care and family engagement within their area.

Matrons are responsible for providing compassionate and inclusive leadership and management to promote high standards of clinical care, patient safety and experience. They oversee the prevention and control of infections, monitor the cleanliness of the environment and ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care. Matrons also develop and implement policies and procedures to improve the overall quality of care.

In addition to their clinical duties, Matrons are involved in workforce management, finance and budgeting, education and development, patient flow, performance management, digital technology and research. They work closely with multidisciplinary teams including consultants, nurse specialists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists to provide comprehensive care. Matrons also support staff, particularly new ward leaders, department and service managers.
