After your endoscopy visit

Information for patients, relatives and carers

This information sheet has been provided to help answer some of the questions you, your family and friends may have about what to expect after your colorectal surgery.

After your endoscopy visit

During your endoscopy today an abnormality has been seen in your bowel. The doctor/nurse has taken a biopsy which will confirm what type of cells is contained within the abnormality in the bowel. However, this only tells us what the inside of the bowel looks like. You may need further tests so we can gather more information about the surrounding area to help make a diagnosis. This will then aid decisions about the best treatment for you. Some of these tests may be arranged today and you will receive confirmation of these tests via phone or letter.

You will need to come to hospital for the tests and these may include:

  • CT scan/CT colonography
  • MRI scan
  • Colonoscopy

When will I get the results?

When all the results are available, your case will be discussed at a team meeting which include colorectal surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, gastroenterologists and clinical nurse specialists. After the meeting, the nurse specialist or another member of the team will contact you with a date for an appointment where you will be given the results and will be advised on what treatment will be best for you. This process usually takes 2–3 weeks.

There will be time to ask questions during this appointment. We advise you bring someone with you to this appointment for support and to help recall the information given to you. If you have any questions before or after the appointment, please contact the colorectal nurse (details above).
