Professor Neena Modi, Consultant Neonatologist at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, is among the lead authors of a major new international report published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, setting out a bold vision for the future of neonatal care worldwide.
The Lancet Commission on the Future of Neonatology, co-authored by Professor Modi, Professor Daniele De Luca, Professor Jonathan Davis and over 100 global experts, addresses the urgent need to transform the way we care for newborns — particularly those born prematurely or with critical health conditions.
Despite significant advances over the past 60 years, neonatal mortality remains unacceptably high in many parts of the world, and many infants continue to face lifelong complications due to a lack of appropriate treatment options and support.
The Commission identifies major gaps in innovation, including the limited development of safe and effective drugs and medical devices specifically for neonatal care. It calls for a coordinated global effort to address challenges in regulation, funding, leadership and collaboration, and highlights the need to involve patients, families and advocacy groups in shaping research and care pathways.
The report calls on regulators, governments, funders, industry, and clinicians to unite behind a common goal: to drive innovation, improve outcomes, and ensure health equity for newborns everywhere.
