Trust committed to being a green champion in the NHS

15 November 2021

Our Trust is committed to being the change we want to see. With more than 1.4 million people in the NHS, joining forces with our suppliers, staff, patients and partners, we aim to fulfil the NHS’s ambition of reaching net zero carbon emissions alongside other hospitals in the capital.

Our Trust is committed to being the change we want to see. With more than 1.4 million people in the NHS, joining forces with our suppliers, staff, patients and partners, we aim to fulfil the NHS’s ambition of reaching net zero carbon emissions alongside other hospitals in the capital. That is why we’re delighted to pledge our commitment to the NHS Green targets:

  • For the emissions we control directly (the NHS Carbon Footprint), we will reach net zero by 2040
  • For the emissions we can influence (our NHS Carbon Footprint Plus), we will reach net zero by 2045

Climate changes will unenviably lead to poorer health conditions and contribute towards major illnesses such as heart disease, asthma and more. We want to be part of the greener movement that makes our country’s climate improve and work towards being carbon neutral.

We have 4 work streams as part of our green plan:

  • Reducing the carbon impact of NHS-related travel and transport
  • Improving our estates and facilities to meet net-zero
  • Moving to a model of sustainable procurement
  • Codesigning new models of care and health delivery innovation

Virginia Massaro (Chief Financial Officer and Trust Sustainability Lead) says: “I’m delighted that Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has pledged its commitment to the net zero targets. Together with our partners we will continue to pursue our ambition to reduce the impact of our activities on the environment while providing sustainable healthcare. This means that the way we operate today must meet the needs of the present, while collaboratively building on a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.”

COP26 ignited nations for taking action and we couldn’t be more pleased to join this cause as part of one of the most recognised British institutes—the NHS. Follow our Trust journey and support a greener NHS with us!
