Inpatient pain management

What we do

The inpatient pain service is a consultant and nurse led service that manages the needs of patients with acute and chronic pain in the hospital. Our team of clinical nurse specialists provides daily ward rounds to support clinical staff and review both surgical and medical patients who require specialist advice. Our consultants and specialist doctors also provide daily support and regular ward rounds.

Our service provides support across acute medical areas, critical care and surgery for epidural infusions, opioid infusions (patient and nurse controlled analgesia) and expert advice on medications. Many of the clinical nurse specialists are non-medical prescribers.

We review patients in the children's and adolescent areas and provide a limited follow-up in clinic for patients who are discharged on opioids and require review. Our staff additionally work within both the inpatient and outpatient services to ensure that good integration within the pain service is maintained.

Providing you the best service

The inpatient pain service collects audit data on all activity, as well as providing frequent staff education days to both adult and paediatric staff. We provide guidelines and support across the Trust, undertake regular service review days and have strong collaborative links with our local hospitals in the area including the Royal Marsden and Royal Brompton hospitals.
