Celebrating International Day of the Midwife (5 May), photographer James Clifford Kent returned to Queen Mary Maternity Unit at West Middlesex University Hospital, this time to capture non-surgical maternity care.

The project titled MIDWIFE, is a new photo series following Kent's multi-award-winning MATERNITY project also captured at West Middlesex Hospital, where his daughter was born in 2020.

Kent spent time embedded with midwives and the wider maternity team at QMMU, observing care across the full pathway – from antenatal clinics and the labour ward to the birth centre and postnatal services. His documentary approach captures both the pace and the people behind the service, highlighting the skill, compassion and teamwork involved in delivering care every day.

The series provides a powerful insight into modern maternity care and the dedication of colleagues supporting families and bringing new life into the world, around the clock.
