Chelsea and Westminster Hospital introduces AI-powered solution for cataract surgery patients

23 October 2023

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital have begun a pilot to contact patients on the cataract surgery pathway using an AI-powered solution called Dora.

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital have begun a pilot in the Ophthalmology Department to contact patients on the cataract surgery pathway using an AI-powered solution called Dora delivered by Ufonia.

Patients will receive a telephone call from Dora and can have a normal conversation about their cataract surgery. Dora will ask patients questions and can also answer certain queries.

Dora will call patients throughout their cataract care journey from referral to recovery, and each conversation will last 5–10 minutes.

Patients with a mobile phone will receive a text message advising of the date and time of their upcoming call from Dora.

Dora is expected to help improve the speed and efficiency of our clinical service, supporting our doctors, nurses and administrators to focus on other key tasks for our patients.

This pilot study emphasizes safety and serves as a concept test rather than a full-fledged service. We are implementing strict gateways to ensure acceptance and closely monitoring the implementation of Dora to prioritise patient well-being and responsible use of AI technology.
