This page gives an overview of the various changes we are making and where you can get more information. These new ways of working keep you safe, get you the right treatment, keep our staff safe, and let us treat a wider range of patients.

We will continue to use telephone and video appointments where possible. Some appointments may be face-to-face where necessary.

We have introduced a variety of digital solutions to improve your control over appointment processes and allow access to information in other ways.

Patients and visitors—keeping each other safe

greetingIn general all patients and visitors will be:

  • temperature-checked on arrival
  • asked to wear a mask/face covering and use hand sanitizer
  • asked a checklist of relevant questions to see if they have symptoms or have been exposed to COVID-19 or other infections recently
  • asked to continue to social distance—2m from other people—in the hospital

You will notice new signage, one way systems, reduced seating, and directions to specific entrances to help keep us suitably apart.

Checking staff and using the right precautions

Staff check

  • Clinical staff have their temperature check on arrival to work.  

  • All our staff are asked not to attend work if they have any symptoms and they have a COVID-19 test and negative result before they are able to return to work

  • Staff moving between clinical areas, and between clinical and non-clinical areas, will adjust their PPE (personal protective equipment) accordingly—this means, even if they work in areas with COVID-19 positive patients, they will not be wearing equipment that can infect you 
  • Staff wear simple masks in non-clinical areas (unless they can socially distance).

Separating patients with and without COVID-19

  • We’re experienced at dealing with infectious diseases and now COVID-19. Our hospital services are being redesigned to test all patients and keep those patients with COVID-19 and those without in safe, separated areas. This ensures all patients get the right care, with the right precautions.
  • There are different zones in the hospital based on the patients seen and the procedures carried out.

Planned procedures and surgery


  • Usually you will be asked to enter by a dedicated entrance, not through the main hospital entrance—this is best practice, and takes you straight to a dedicated area where you will be treated
  • In general, after phone assessment, an adult patient will be asked to observe various precautions for a specified time, to take a COVID-19 test some days before the appointment, and then to self isolate until the appointment—specific details will be provided after the assessment

We have always treated emergencies throughout the pandemic, and we continue to do so. Patients are isolated, checked for symptoms and tested to avoid infecting others. Accident and Emergency (A&E) and Urgent Care Centre (UCC) facilities are open at both our hospital sites
