The Care Quality Commission, the independent health watchdog in England, published ratings for all NHS trusts in England in October 2009—every trust was given 1 of 4 possible scores ranging from ‘Weak’ (worst) to ‘Excellent’ (best) for both Quality of services and Quality of financial management.

Chelsea and Westminster scored Excellent for both Quality of services and Quality of financial management.

Only 37 out of 392 NHS trusts in England (9 out of 73 NHS trusts in London) achieved a double ‘Excellent’ rating which means we are ranked among the top 9% of NHS trusts in England and among the top 12% of NHS trusts in London.

NHS Chief Executive, David Nicholson, and Care Quality Commission Chairman, Barbara Young, singled out Chelsea and Westminster among 41 trusts nationally that have performed strongly in the performance ratings for the last 2 years.

In a letter sent to Heather Lawrence, Chief Executive of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, they said: “We would like to congratulate everyone in your Trust on your performance in the NHS ratings for 2008/09.

“This assessment has shown that your Trust has sustained high levels of performance throughout 2008/09 across a broad range of standards and indicators covering issues that patients and the public have said are important to them.

“We want to acknowledge the achievements of your staff and thank all of you for all that has been done on behalf of patients.”

This is a tribute to the hard work and expertise of all our staff and we would like to thank them for all their efforts.

The Care Quality Commission’s independent assessment is confirmation that all patients can expect the very highest standards of care when they choose to be treated at Chelsea and Westminster.
