Staff at top London hospital rewarded for ‘Excellent’ performance

07 December 2007

Bosses at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust have approved a one-off payment of £100 to staff as a thank you for helping the Trust to achieve an ‘Excellent’ score in the recent NHS performance ratings.

Bosses at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust have approved a one-off payment of £100 to staff as a thank you for helping the Trust to achieve an ‘Excellent’ score in the recent NHS performance ratings.

Staff were informed about the bonus payment on Friday November 9 after the decision was taken by the Trust Board on Thursday October 25 – staff will receive the bonus by the end of November.

Chelsea and Westminster was 1 of only 19 NHS trusts in England, and 1 of only 3 in London, that scored ‘Excellent’ for both quality of services and use of resources in the annual ratings published by the Healthcare Commission. Chelsea and Westminster is therefore in the top 5% of NHS trusts nationally.

The Healthcare Commission said staff at Chelsea and Westminster “provided an excellent quality of service to patients, having made improvements compared to the previous year”.

Heather Lawrence, Chief Executive says: “The Healthcare Commission ratings demonstrate that our staff have delivered significant improvements in the quality of care for our patients over the last 12 months.

“The Trust Board recognises this achievement was made possible by the efforts of all staff and so has decided to say thank you by making a one-off payment of £100.

“Bonuses of this kind are commonplace in the private sector and the Board felt that on this occasion it was an appropriate way to thank staff for ‘going the extra mile’ to improve the quality of care that they provide for patients.

“We have used our financial flexibility as a Foundation Trust to give staff a tangible reward for their efforts because their hard work and expertise are the cornerstone of the high quality care that we provide.”

Notes to editors:

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust was authorised as a Foundation Trust in October 2006 and achieved a double rating of ‘Excellent’ in the Healthcare Commission’s annual NHS performance ratings in October 2007 – 1 of only 19 trusts in England to score a double ‘Excellent’.

Healthcare associated infection rates have been reduced by 50% in the last two years and the hospital is in the top five NHS trusts nationally for reduced mortality rates.

The hospital provides a wide range of services to its local community and a number of specialist services including HIV/AIDS, Burns and Neonatal Intensive Care to patients from a wider catchment area.
