Anaesthetic services (children)

What we do

We provide a full range of anaesthetic support for newborns, infants and children, with specialists available to carry out any anaesthetic treatment as required, any time of the day or night.

We support a wide range of both elective (planned) and emergency operations, including surgery on premature and very young babies. We also provide anaesthesia for paediatric patients requiring surgical treatment for burns and for imaging treatments including CTMRI and X-rays.

Our pain service for children is consultant-led and our anaesthetists work closely with the children’s pre-assessment unit to ensure that patients with complex medical needs are thoroughly assessed and prepared before their surgery. We also provide vital assistance to the children’s high dependency unit, in particular for children who need help with their breathing following surgery, and within A&E for the stabilisation of sick children. The pain service for children is consultant-led too.

Sharing our expertise and skills is important to us and, as such, we are one of the main teaching centres in London for training doctors who wish to extend their skills and competency in children’s anaesthesia.

Our team

We are eleven anaesthetic consultants with specialist expertise in children’s anaesthesia. We operate an on call rota so that there is always a specialist available for children requiring an anaesthetic at any time of the day or night, every day of the year. Our team is led by Dr Manisha Kulkarni, Lead Consultant for Paediatric Anaesthesia.
