Treatment Centre at Chelsea starts major redevelopment

15 March 2024

Works have commenced redeveloping the Treatment Centre and the Therapies outpatient department at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, with completion due in Spring 2025.

We are delighted to confirm that works have now started to redevelop the Treatment Centre and the Therapies outpatient department at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, with completion due in Spring 2025.

Since the opening of the hospital more than 30 years ago, the Treatment Centre has supported high quality care for thousands of patients undergoing day case and short stay procedures.

Although the Treatment Centre has served us well, the facility is outdated and needs expansion and refurbishment. With the generous support of CW+, our official charity, our aim is to:

  • Create modern and welcoming facilities, which support the latest surgical innovation and more complex procedures
  • Ensure the highest possible quality of care for our patients
  • Offer a better working environment for staff
  • Treat more patients year-on-year and improve patient aftercare
  • Improve efficiency: treating more patients at a lower cost.

The redevelopment works will help increase the footprint of the Treatment Centre by more than 70%, retaining seven operating theatres, including two brand-new theatres. We will also improve recovery facilities for patients by developing a new overnight recovery area. This means that more complex procedures can take place without the need for inpatient admission.

To support the expansion of the Treatment Centre, and as part of wider redevelopment plans across the hospital, the Therapies outpatient department will relocate from the ground floor to the lower ground floor.

The Treatment Centre will remain open for surgery during the works, and we are working hard to minimise disruption to patients, staff and local residents wherever possible.

We will continue to engage with patients and the local community as the works continue.
