Parent information sheet for walking boots

Your child has sustained a fracture of their ankle or foot: these types of fractures are stable and can be treated with a walking boot. The doctor/nurse practitioner will have fitted your child with the appropriate sized boot.  You will need to attend fracture clinic for follow up. The normal healing process takes about 6 weeks.

There are different types of walking boot.

Paediatric Walking boot

To fit the boot, place the boot flat on the floor, undo the Velcro straps, place foot snugly into the walker, close the lining, and secure the Velcro straps, making sure foot is not moving around in boot.

To accommodate for rubbing or spacing, additional foam pads are provided

Rebound Air Walkers

Occasionally, your child will be fitted with an air cast boot. This depends on the type of fracture your child has sustained.

To fit this boot, open by unfastening straps and removing the front shell. Do not remove air bulb from liner. Place foot securely in boot, close the lining, place front shell over front of leg/ankle ensuring air bulb in aligned with the opening.  Fasten the Velcro straps.

Inflate the air chambers by pressing + air bulb, inflate or deflate until snug and comfortable. Before removing the boot, make sure you deflate the boot.

Any time your child is walking, they should use the boot: it should be removed for washing, when child’s foot is up and at bed time.

They should not play sport/PE while wearing the boot.

Washing instructions

Remove the liner from the walker. The liner should be washed by hand using mild detergent in cold water and lay out to dry.

DO NOT machine wash or tumble dry.
