Each year the organisation which regulates the NHS carries out a national survey to find out more about the care received by patients who are admitted to the hospital for at least one night.

This survey by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) is an important way of helping the NHS to improve peoples’ inpatient care and experience, by listening carefully to feedback given and using it to make positive changes.

If you were admitted at Chelsea and Westminster or West Middlesex hospitals in November 2023, you may be sent a letter inviting you to take part in this survey. Taking part is voluntary, but your views are really important to us and to the CQC.

Feedback from previous surveys has shown that as a trust, our patients wanted an improved meal service, greater communication and involvement over decisions about their care, a smoother and more structured discharge process and more support for daily activities, such as washing and dressing, whilst on the ward.

Since receiving this feedback, the trust has reintroduced protected mealtimes with clear guidance for both staff and patients on ensuring patients are supported with their nutrition, implemented targeted work to focus on professional standards for conversations over care with patients, introduction of a digital system to better inform patients of their treatment and support any questions they may have, introduction of two discharge ready units and dedicated discharge lounges, and continued support and education for nursing colleagues on wards.

If you would like to share feedback on your inpatient experience, please get in touch with our PALS team: Chelsea and Westminster Hospital chelwest.cwpals@nhs.net or West Middlesex University Hospital: chelwest.wmpals@nhs.net.
