Trauma & Orthopaedics
The Orthopaedics Unit offers a full range of assessment, treatment and follow up for musculoskeletal disorders.
The consultants specialise in the following areas: hip and knee replacements, hip and knee revision procedures, complex soft tissue knee surgery, hand surgery, shoulder surgery and paediatric orthopaedic surgery.
The department has also established links with the Rheumatologists and the Care of the Elderly department providing an integrated care service for patients who suffer from musculoskeletal disorders.
All patients for elective inpatient and day care surgery are given a thorough Nurse-led pre-operative examination where the information about their surgery and stay in hospital can be provided. This service is supported by a team of specialist nurses.
There are dedicated outpatient clinics that accept referrals from the A&E Department and GPs. These include a specialist knee clinic that deals with sports injuries, hand and wrist clinics that are held in conjunction with specialist consultants from other hospitals and physiotherapy practitioner clinics which are run by dedicated orthopaedic physiotherapists supported by consultants when required.
The department also has dedicated clinics in which the application of surgical appliances and specialist orthotic services are provided.
