Gastroenterology (including Hepatology)
The Gastroenterologists co-ordinate the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract. This comprises the oesophagus, stomach, small intestines & bowel, the pancreas and liver.
The Department is nationally renowned, committed to providing the highest quality of care to the local community and to patients referred from other regions. Teaching medical students from Imperial College and training gastroenterologists forms a core part of our service.
In addition to providing general gastrointestinal and liver services, as a tertiary referral centre we have particular expertise in inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), diseases of the pancreas and liver, HIV and gastrointestinal disease, and gastrointestinal cancers.
There are eight consultants, five specialist trainees and seven junior doctors in the Department, supported by clinical nurse specialists in inflammatory bowel disease and hepatitis. A state of the art endoscopy unit (opened March 2013) performs interventional (highly specialised) procedures, such as endoscopic ultrasound, ERCP, capsule endoscopy, colonoscopy, and endoscopic surgery.
