General Surgery (children)
Our general surgery department is renowned both nationally and internationally for its expertise in keyhole/laparoscopic surgery, especially in neonates which it helped pioneer. As a result, almost all paediatric surgery in north west London is performed at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and the department attracts referrals from all over the UK.
Our surgeons are leaders in their field and have expertise in neonatal, gastrointestinal and urological procedures including thoracic and abdominal keyhole procedures. In addition to planned surgical care, the team also provides 24 hour, seven day paediatric surgery cover for emergency care.
Children are supported by a team of highly skilled specialist nurses who provide care before and after surgery, as well as home care. The department also emphasises providing support for parents and families.
Chelsea and Westminster Hospital is currently undergoing a £39m redevelopment of the main hospital site, which aims to improve services for patients.
A two-storey extension to the first and second floors of the hospital will help us to achieve the Trust’s vision of providing world class children’s services following our designation as the lead centre of specialist paediatric and neonatal surgery in North West London.
The development will enable all of our children’s services to be located on one level and include the development of a new paediatric theatre suite with four theatres, one of which will include a state-of-the-art surgical robot. It also includes a new extended Paediatric High Dependency Unit with full ventilation facilities which opened in October.
