Maternity services

We are passionate about the quality of care we provide and our woman-focused approach looks at your needs throughout each and every stage of your pregnancy. We provide maternity services at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, West Middlesex University Hospital and in the community, supporting 11,000 women a year who give birth with us. You can choose to plan to give birth at either of our hospitals or at home.

We aim to provide the best possible experience for mothers, babies and families, and are truly delighted that so many women not only choose to return to us for second and subsequent births, but also recommend us to family and friends.

The majority of women experience very normal pregnancies and birth journeys and we have a full range of options for maternity care. As well as our fantastic midwifery-led care we also provide an excellent obstetric model of care to include specialist support for more complex pregnancies and health conditions with an excellent fetal medicine unit. We are very proud of our teamwork ethic, where staff work together to plan and deliver one-to-one care tailored to the needs of individual women.

As a team we support each other across our two hospital sites and, although you will book at one of our hospitals, there are times when you may receive certain aspects of your care at our other hospital site. We will let you know should the need arise.

Together with our state-of-the-art facilities and initiatives that go beyond immediate health and care needs—for example, our complementary therapies service—we continually strive to give babies, parents and families everything they need for the best start in life.

Getting referred

To book your care with us you can either get referred by your GP, walk into our antenatal clinics at the hospitals, refer from the early pregnancy unit (EPU) or complete our self-referral form:

Care Information Exchange (CIE)

The CIE is a web application provided by PatientsKnowBest (PKB) that gives patients access to their health (medical) records, which can be updated by the patient and shared with different medical teams and carers to help speed up and improve treatment.

Your information is held in the secure NHS network. It will only be used by healthcare professionals for your direct care. You can choose to share your care record with your family, carers, GP and other health professionals if you wish.

If you have difficulty or are unable to register on the link above, please complete this form.

Post-birth contraception services

Access to primary care contraceptive services and sexual health services is significantly reduced due to COVID-19. For this reason, the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) guidance has been updated to recommend that all maternity units provide contraceptives prior to discharge from maternity services. It is important to note that the community contraceptive services may continue to be limited for the foreseeable future.

As fertility returns rapidly after childbirth, effective contraception should be started as soon as possible after childbirth by both breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding mothers. This will enable you to plan any subsequent pregnancy and reduce risks associated with short intervals between pregnancies.

The recommendations include:

  • Long acting Reversible Contraceptive (LARC) methods which are highly effective and include coils, implants and depo injections.
  • Progesterone only pills (POP) which are extremely safe with very few contraindications to their use. The POP can be started immediately after the birth (or by Day 21) without any need for additional contraceptive precautions. We will offer all women a six-month supply of this unless there are any medical contraindications.

While there will be a few circumstances when these options may not be suitable or you may have a preference for other methods, the maternity team members will be able to support you through these.

You are advised to access information about contraceptive choices (also on our Mum & Baby app, see sidebar) before your next consultation with the maternity team. We recommend that you decide on your preferred method of contraception prior to giving birth so that we can facilitate this without delaying your discharge from hospital.
