Crane Ward

What we do

Our Crane Ward at West Middlesex is a medical ward specialising in frailty and care of the elderly. As an Acute Frailty Unit (AFU), we provide specialist care for our particularly frail patients over 65 years old.

To ensure patients are discharged in a timely way once they no longer require hospital care, the multidisciplinary team, led by our consultants, is accelerating new ways of working to reduce length of stay. Staff, relatives and patients are encouraged to take simple steps to combat deconditioning—getting patients out of hospital gowns and in their own clothes, moving around the ward, and interacting and engaging with others in activities of daily living.

This approach also prevents elderly patients from becoming reliant on community services, as it is less likely they are readmitted or require care in a nursing home.
