Dr Hawkins trained at University College Hospital, London. He has published over 100 peer reviewed papers and written a standard atlas on HIV and STDs. He also is an author of numerous guidelines in aspects of HIV and Sexual Health. Current research interests include management of genital dermatoses, recurrent candidal infection and syphilis diagnostic tests, HIV in Pregnancy and HIV post exposure prophylaxis.
