Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to have won Gold in a new data visualisation competition sponsored by the Nuffield Trust, the BMJ and NHS Digital. Using data provided by NHS Digital, entrants were asked to tell a captivating visual story about the health of different groups of people in England.

Dr Beth Davies (Senior Clinical Fellow at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust) and Derryn Lovett (Geographical Information System Analyst), who works with the Trust and Imperial College London as part of the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration for Northwest London, developed a one-page visual illustration of estimates of undiagnosed Atrial Fibrillation (AF) across England and the importance of finding these patients.

This winning entry in the static category (the other category was dynamic pieces) was entitled Atrial Fibrillation Related Stroke Risk in England and told a visually-engaging and informative story about the importance of identifying the unmet need for anti-coagulation.

The work was supported by Dr Sadia Khan (Consultant Cardiologist), who leads the Trust’s AF programme. The AF detection programme includes an innovation project, part of CW Innovation—led by the Trust and their charity CW+—which uses a mobile electrocardiogram recorder that attaches to a smartphone to perform an ECG in just 30 seconds. The project has been running for 4 years, increasing detection rates for AF by 1/3 in the Trust’s community, significantly reducing stroke.
