As diabetes is common in the Hounslow area with 1 in 5 West Middlesex inpatients suffering from the condition, the hospital will be supporting 'Hypo Awareness Week’ which takes place between 9 – 13 September.

As diabetes is common in the Hounslow area with 1 in 5West Middlesexinpatients suffering from the condition, the hospital will be supporting 'Hypo Awareness Week’ which takes place between 9 – 13 September.

The week aims to raise awareness of hypoglycaemia (or ‘hypo’), a common complication of diabetes and reduce it happening when patients stay in hospital.

Clinical staff at West Middlesex have on-going training in the symptoms and treatment of hypos and each ward has guidelines and a ‘hypo box’ containing everything needed to treat a hypo.

Parminder Rihal, Diabetes Specialist Nurse will run a stand in the main hospital atrium on Tuesday 10 September, 9.00am – 1.00pm where she will be on hand to answer any questions from both patients and staff.

Parminder explained: “Staff say they’ve found training and hypo boxes very helpful. It’s important that we keep up the awareness and training so they recognise when diabetes patients staying with us have symptoms of hypos, and they know how to treat them.

“Swift action and good management helps to avoid delays to patients’ overall recovery and return home.”
