This half term holiday Chelsea and Westminster Volunteering Services and Work Experience has opened its doors to 10 students on work experience as part of the INSPIRE programme.

Maddy Than (Volunteering Services and Work Experience Manager) said: “The programme was set up in order to give young people a chance to gain experience in a hospital environment, which is fundamental as the competitive job market means that experience is needed more than ever.  It tries to encourage teenagers to pursue a career in healthcare, as well as exposing them to the vast variety of jobs on offer.”

The programme is in its second year and judging from the remarkable feedback Maddy received last year, it is undoubtedly an incredible course to be a part of. It gives each student a chance to develop their knowledge on different NHS jobs such as: nursing, medicine, therapy, surgery, decontamination, radiology and PR. It offers them all a chance to see how things operate behind the scenes and how every single department is linked in various ways.

James Rossi, one of the students involved on the course said; “It is an amazing, eye opening experience which allowed me as an inspiring physiotherapist to view all the different sectors of the health service and gain a clearer understanding of the department I am looking to go into. As a teenager, it is extremely hard to obtain work experience in a health environment. Therefore, I fully appreciate Chelsea and Westminster Hospital giving me this opportunity.”

Although the students have not yet fully completed the course they all are already learning lifelong skills that they will be able to use in whatever careers they decide to pursue.
