Looking after yourself and others during hot weather

25 July 2019

Temperatures have been rising this week. For many of us, this is a glorious spell of sunshine that we are enjoying but some people are particularly vulnerable in the heat—those with heart, respiratory and serious health problems are more at risk and the heat can make these conditions worse.

Temperatures have been rising this week. For many of us, this is a glorious spell of sunshine that we are enjoying but some people are particularly vulnerable in the heat—those with heart, respiratory and serious health problems are more at risk and the heat can make these conditions worse. Babies and young children are also especially at risk.

Please ensure you drink plenty of water, wear a hat and sunscreen and keep an eye on vulnerable people around you. Please also carry water with you at all times when travelling.

Danger symptoms to look out for in hot weather include feeling faint and dizzy, short of breath, vomiting or increasing confusion, which may indicate the onset of heatstroke. Take immediate action if these danger symptoms are present—cool down as quickly as possible. Many prescription medicines can reduce your tolerance of heat. You should keep taking your medicines, but take extra care to keep cool.
