Great Big Cheer Awards categories

Please review the criteria for your chosen award category and ensure your nomination includes clear examples that highlight the nominee’s impact and achievements.

Allied Health Professional Cheer Award

Open to Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) of all grades and specialties, including associates. AHPs include art therapists, dietitians, drama therapists, music therapists, occupational therapists, operating department practitioners, orthoptists, osteopaths, paramedics, physiotherapists, podiatrists, prosthetists and orthotists, radiographers and speech and language therapists.

Consider when nominating:

  • Did they involve patients in treatment planning and provide clear guidance, such as home exercise plans?
  • Did they make a real difference to outcomes, such as reducing pain or engaging children and patients with learning disabilities or dementia?
  • Did they provide a calming, supportive environment?
  • Did they innovate or go beyond expectations to improve patient care?

Best Use of Resources Award

Recognises innovative approaches to grow and strengthen our culture of continuous quality improvement and delivering better care at lower cost. Consider when nominating:

  • Has the nominee reduced reliance on agency or bank staff or reduced waste?
  • Do they optimise clinical appointments to reduce waiting lists?
  • Have they introduced digital solutions or other innovations that improved performance or outcomes or made the service run more efficiently?

Cheer Award for Inclusion

Recognises individuals or teams who champion equality, diversity and inclusion. Consider when nominating:

  • Have they supported staff EDI networks or promoted cultural understanding?
  • Have they embedded diversity and inclusion beyond expectations of their role?
  • Have they demonstrated kindness and openness, reflecting the PROUD value “open and honest”?
  • Did their actions result in measurable improvements for staff and/or patients?

Doctor Cheer Award

Open to doctors and surgeons of all grades and specialties. Consider when nominating:

  • Did the doctor listen and truly explore all options for diagnosis and treatment?
  • Did they involve patients in decisions and clearly explain choices?
  • Did they make patients feel safe, respected and cared for?
  • Did they show compassion, professionalism and reassurance throughout?
  • Have they gone above and beyond to improve or innovate patient care?

Leader of the Year Cheer Award

Recognises an outstanding leader who inspires others, supports their team and creates the conditions for people to deliver their best work. Consider when nominating:

  • Do they lead with compassion, integrity and openness and demonstrate the PROUD values?
  • Do they support, develop and empower colleagues, helping people to reach their potential?
  • Have they led their team effectively through change, challenge or difficult circumstances?
  • Do they listen to colleagues, act on feedback and create an inclusive and supportive working environment?
  • Has their leadership resulted in improvements for patients, staff or services?

Green Cheer Award

Recognises contributions to sustainability and environmental responsibility. Consider when nominating:

  • Have they reduced waste or spending through eco-friendly innovation?
  • Did they introduce new environmentally friendly services that improved patient care?
  • Have they influenced their team to adopt a green mindset, for example through recycling initiatives?

Clinical Support Worker Cheer Award

Open to clinical support workers across all services, including Healthcare Assistants (HCAs), Maternity Support Workers (MSWs), therapy and rehabilitation assistants, physiotherapy assistants, occupational therapy assistants and other clinical support roles. Consider when nominating:

  • Did they show kindness, compassion and respect to patients?
  • Did they provide reassurance and support during care or hospital stays?
  • Did they go above and beyond to meet patient needs?
  • Have they demonstrated innovation in improving patient experience?

Midwife Cheer Award

Open to all registered midwives. Consider when nominating:

  • Did they provide compassionate, respectful care to women and their partners?
  • Did they involve patients in birth plans and provide reassurance?
  • Did they consider individual needs and demonstrate exceptional clinical skills?
  • Did they show leadership and innovation to improve experiences for families?

Nurse Cheer Award

Open to all registered nurses. Consider when nominating:

  • Did they show compassion, respect and professionalism, making patients feel safe and at ease?
  • Did they clearly explain treatment and listen to patients’ concerns?
  • Did they demonstrate leadership skills or innovations that directly improved outcomes?
  • Were they a strong team player representing the profession positively?

Admin and Clerical Cheer Award

Open to all staff in administrative and clerical roles. Consider when nominating:

  • Did they demonstrate professionalism, kindness and respect?
  • Were they approachable, supportive and effective in resolving queries?
  • Have they introduced improvements to patient services or team efficiency?
  • Do they go the extra mile to support clinical teams and colleagues?

Patient Experience Cheer Award

Recognises individuals or teams who demonstrate commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care. Consider when nominating:

  • Did the nominee listen, understand health concerns and explain treatment or discharge plans clearly?
  • Did they involve patients in decisions and make them feel safe, respected and cared for?
  • Did they show kindness, warmth and compassion?
  • Did they go above and beyond to meet patient needs?

Pharmacist and Healthcare Scientist Cheer Award

Recognises pharmacists and healthcare scientists who deliver excellence in patient care. Consider when nominating:

  • Did they provide clear, safe and accurate advice, counselling or diagnostic information?
  • Did they introduce innovations or new methods that improved patient outcomes or efficiency?
  • Did they ensure the highest standards of safety, accuracy and quality in medicines, testing or treatment?
  • Did they support colleagues with specialist knowledge, leadership or training that made a difference to patients?

PROUD Award

Recognises those who live our values every day. Consider when nominating:

  • Are they living the PROUD values and delivering safe, high-quality services?
  • Have they introduced innovative ideas or enhanced existing services?
  • Did they achieve excellent results in challenging circumstances?
  • Do they facilitate collaboration, deliver exceptional work or achieve cost reduction or income generation beyond expectation?

Support Service Cheer Award

Open to staff and contractors, including ISS, portering, cleaning, catering, reception, post, estates, transport and security. Consider when nominating:

  • Did they provide a welcoming, professional and supportive environment?
  • Did they show kindness, compassion and approachability?
  • Did they go the extra mile to help clinical teams deliver excellent care?

Team Cheer Award

Recognises a team whose collaboration, commitment and collective achievements have made an exceptional difference to patients, colleagues or services. Consider when nominating:

  • Does the team work effectively together and support one another to achieve shared goals?
  • Have they delivered exceptional results or maintained a high-quality service in challenging circumstances?
  • Have they improved patient care, staff experience or the way a service is delivered?
  • Do they demonstrate the PROUD values through the way they work together and with others?
  • Have they gone above and beyond what would normally be expected of the team?

Excellence in Learning Cheer Award

Recognises individuals or teams who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to learning and development and use it to improve patient care, staff experience or services. Consider when nominating:

  • Have they created, delivered or actively engaged in high-quality learning and development opportunities?
  • Have they used learning to improve patient care, safety, experience, flow or the way a service is delivered?
  • Do they share knowledge and support colleagues to develop their skills, confidence or practice?
  • Have they introduced new ideas or ways of working as a result of learning?
  • Have they demonstrated a strong commitment to continuous improvement and development?

Lifetime Achievement Cheer Award

Recognises an individual whose sustained contribution and commitment over the course of their career has made an exceptional difference to patients, colleagues or the Trust. Consider when nominating:

  • Have they demonstrated exceptional dedication and commitment throughout their career?
  • Have they made a significant and lasting contribution to patient care, colleagues or services?
  • Have they consistently demonstrated the PROUD values and been a positive influence on those around them?
  • Have they supported, inspired or developed others and shared their knowledge and experience?
  • Have they left a lasting legacy through their work or made a contribution that will continue to benefit others?

Volunteer of the Year

Open to all volunteers. Consider when nominating:

  • Did they create a welcoming and supportive environment for patients?
  • Did they help patients attend appointments or feel cared for during their stay?
  • Did they demonstrate compassion, respect, dedication and professionalism?
  • Did they make a positive difference to both patients and colleagues?
