Annie Zunz

Annie Zunz Ward is a 28-bed ward specialising in Gynaecology with seven consultants. Booked admissions are admitted to the ward Sun–Fri and emergency admissions 24/7.

On Admission

On admission, a doctor and a nurse will ask you questions about your general health, take your blood pressure and discuss your operation with you. You will be allocated a named nurse who will be responsible for your care while you are on the ward.

Who’s Who

Sister Mary Knight is in charge of the ward. Staff Nurses wear royal blue dresses with blue belts, Senior Staff Nurses wear royal blue dresses with red belts, Student Nurses wear purple striped outfits and Healthcare Assistants wear grey dresses.

Before your operation

The Anaesthetist will see you before your operation and may prescribe a pre-medication. You will have nothing to eat or drink from midnight if your operation is in the morning, or you will have breakfast at 6am if your operation is in the afternoon. All operations have to be performed on an empty stomach.

On the day

You should have a bath on the morning of your operation and put on the white gown that your nurse will give you. The white gown is worn back to front. Some ladies will require compression (TED) stockings. You must remove all make-up, including nail varnish, contact lenses, dentures and anything ‘false’ must be removed. You may keep your wedding ring on but it will need to be taped onto your finger. If required, a pre-medication will be given approximately one hour before you go to theatre. A theatre porter will collect you and transfer you to the operating theatre on your bed. A nurse from the ward will accompany you.

After your operation

A nurse from the ward will collect you from theatre and bring you back to the ward. Your blood pressure and pulse will be checked, as well as your wound site for blood loss. It is normal to have some bleeding after a gynaecological operation. You may have a drip or a catheter depending on your operation and you may need to stay a couple of days or a week depending on your operation. On discharge you may be given tablets and an outpatient appointment. If you need a certificate for your employer, please ask a staff member.
