Work experience placements
What is work experience?
Work experience placements at Chelsea and Westminster involve a short-term commitment (usually around 1 week) and normally involve shadowing a doctor/nurse/therapist and observing while they visit patients and carry out their daily routine tasks, for example ward rounds, consultancy, and seeing patients. Work experience can you give you a unique insight into the workings of the hospital and the career opportunities available, as well as valuable experience which may improve your chances of gaining entry to a specific course, university or college.
Who can carry out work experience?
You must be over the age of 16 in order to carry out work experience. Unfortunately we cannot accept applications from abroad.
Chelsea and Westminster Hospital receives considerably more requests for work experience placements than it can accommodate. We therefore will give priority to specific local schools and colleges who have an agreement in place.
Please note that some departments do not take work experience students (such as pharmacy / laboratories / maternity) and others may have specific criteria which students must fulfil. For example, you must be 18+ to carry out work experience in some departments.
How do you apply for work experience?
We currently provide general work experience placements for local school children through our local borough. If you study locally please speak to your school regarding these opportunities.
If you are looking to find a specific placement with one of our consultants/managers, enquiries should be made by phone/in writing direct to the relevant department who (if the request is successful) will contact the Volunteer Services & Work Experience Department for the paperwork to be completed. We regret that the Volunteer Services & Work Experience Department is not able to set up specific placements on behalf of individual students, however we are happy to process the paperwork once a placement has been arranged directly with a department.
