Shortlisted for CHKS patient safety award 2012

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has been shortlisted for this year’s CHKS Patient Safety Award—for the second year in a row.

This award—part of the CHKS Top Hospitals programme 2012—recognises outstanding performance in providing a safe hospital environment for patients and is based on a range of indicators, including rates of hospital-acquired infections and mortality.

The CHKS Patient Safety Award is made on the basis of publicly available datasets and every NHS acute trust is included in the analysis. A number of criteria are used to shortlist trusts and, unlike other awards, they are not judged by a convened panel. Four other organisations have been shortlisted for the award and the winner will be announced in a ceremony on 1st May held in London.

Jason Harries, Managing Director, CHKS said: “The government has made it clear that every hospital is accountable to its patients, their families and carers as well as the local community to provide a safe environment. Our patient safety award highlights those trusts that clearly share a commitment to driving improvement and engendering a culture of excellence throughout their organisations.”

The five shortlisted organisations are:

  • Airedale NHS Foundation Trust
  • Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
  • Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust
  • Newham University Hospital NHS Trust
  • South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust

Being open with our patients when things go wrong

We provide safe, high quality care to many thousands of patients every year but sometimes, despite our best efforts, things can go wrong.

If patients are harmed as a result of a mistake or error, we make a commitment to:

  • Apologise for any harm and acknowledge any distress an incident may have caused
  • Explain exactly what went wrong and, where possible, why
  • Invite patients and relatives to tell us about their experience and ask questions
  • Discuss what we are doing to ensure that such a mistake or error does not happen again in future
  • Agree with patients or relatives the name of a member of staff who they can contact at any time in regard to a mistake or error relating to their care
  • Give patients and relatives regular updates on the results of any investigation
  • Respect patients’ privacy and confidentiality

We understand that you may prefer not to talk about your experience with the staff who have been treating you, especially if you need further treatment. We can assure you that this will not affect your future care.

If you do not feel comfortable discussing your experience with the staff involved with your care you can contact our Membership and Patient Advice and Liaison Service (M-PALS) based at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on 020 3315 6727 or via email at m-pals@chelwest.nhs.uk.
