Paediatric survey

What is the paediatric survey?

As one of London’s largest providers of children’s services, we treat 75,000 children a year on inpatient wards, in outpatient clinics and in our dedicated children’s A&E.

Parents of young children aged 0–7 and young patients aged 8–17 who either had an inpatient stay in the hospital or an outpatient appointment in May and June 2011 were sent a survey inviting them to comment on their care.

These surveys were carried out by the Picker Institute on behalf of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

How do parents and young patients rate their care overall?

Inpatient survey

  • 93% of parents of children aged 0–7 who responded to the survey rated their care at Chelsea and Westminster as ‘Excellent’, ‘Very good’ or ‘Good’
  • 89% of young patients aged 8–17 who responded to the survey rated their care at Chelsea and Westminster as ‘Excellent’, ‘Very good’ or ‘Good’

Outpatient survey

  • 96% of parents of children aged 0-7 who responded to the survey rated their care at Chelsea and Westminster as ‘Excellent’, ‘Very good’ or ‘Good’
  • 97% of young patients aged 8-17 who responded to the survey rated their care at Chelsea and Westminster as ‘Excellent’, ‘Very good’ or ‘Good’

What do parents and young patients rate highly?

An area in which the Trust performed particularly well in both the inpatient and outpatient survey was the quality of communication by doctors to children and parents.

What do parents and young patients think we could do better?

The main areas for improvement identified by parents and young patients in both the inpatient and outpatients survey were:

  • Facilities and environment
  • Information and consistent communication

Discharge planning was an area for improvement identified in the inpatient survey.

Patient flow/waiting times was an area for improvement identified in the outpatient survey.

How are we addressing areas for improvement raised in the surveys?

The information from the inpatient survey will inform the physical design and model of service provision for our new children’s wards which will be developed in 2012 as part of a major redevelopment of children’s services at Chelsea and Westminster. We hope this will address some of the issues raised in the survey.

In relation to the outpatient survey, significant changes have been introduced in 2011 to tackle the problems of patient flow and waiting times for outpatients including a staff development programme for healthcare assistants and reception staff, as well as a new pager system for patients waiting for an appointment.
