High risk maternity care

The aim of the high-risk maternity service is to enable women with both pre-existing medical conditions and those medical conditions which arise during pregnancy to achieve a successful pregnancy and birth.

The service is delivered by the High Risk Medical Team. The team look after women with a range of medical problems from the relatively common (such as hypertension and diabetes), to the less common (such as complex congenital heart disease). The team consists or Professor Mark Johnson, Mr Martin Lupton, Ms Zoe Penn, Ms Gubby Ayida and Mr Guy Thorpe-Beeston.

The team also includes the Maple Team, a specialist midwifery service. The midwifery team is skilled at looking after women with medical problems in pregnancy. Both the obstetric and midwifery High Risk teams work closely with the Obstetric Anaesthetic Service, Neonatal Medical team, Paediatric Surgical team, Cardiac Specialists (the cardiologists are based both at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and the Brompton Hospital) and liase closely with other specialists as required.

The service is based at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and can be accessed by clinical referral only.
