Maternity and obstetrics
We are one of the largest maternity services in London, managing around 12,000 births every year. Because of this, there will be more opportunities for women to be supported throughout their pregnancy and labour—24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Not only do both Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital have brand new and expanded facilities to enable mothers to give birth in a safe and comfortable environment, our combined teams of midwives, doctors and healthcare assistants will work together to give all the care and support needed.
A bigger service also means more consultant cover—a maternity specialist will always be on hand when they are needed to provide extra support to women that choose our service.
Chelsea and Westminster Hospital
At Chelsea and Westminster Hospital we know that pregnancy can be an exciting but daunting time for women and their partners. There are many choices to make and questions to answer which is why we have designed these webpages to help you and your family have the best possible experience at this special time—and hopefully answer some of your questions.
We promote natural birth where possible and have invested £1.5m to expand our midwife-led care by building a dedicated new birth centre which opened in January 2014. We are the only NHS Trust in the country to employ doulas and run a Vaginal Birth After Caesarean (VBAC) clinic for mothers who have previously had an uncomplicated caesarean.
You can also choose to have your baby with us through your midwife, at any of our community or hospital clinics, or through your GP.
West Middlesex University Hospital
Our team of midwives, doctors and healthcare assistants work closely together—both in the hospital and in the community—to ensure continuity of high quality care, centred around the needs of each and every woman—a holistic and individualised approach.
Our philosophy is for everyone using our maternity service to be fully involved in making decisions about their care. We believe this is why we are a popular local choice with expectant parents and why many return to us for subsequent pregnancies.
We were the first maternity unit in London to achieve full accreditation by UNICEF as a baby friendly hospital.
We recently expanded our facilities to give women more choice in clean, bright and comfortable surroundings—'a home away from home'. Our individual postnatal suites can be booked for additional privacy and comfort.
