Surgery services

Both hospitals have a wide range of specialty teams that cover the following areas of surgery:

General Surgery and Urology provides a 24-hour support service to the A&E department and includes gastric surgery and minimally invasive keyhole surgery. Inpatient and extensive outpatient facilities offer experience in a wide range of surgical and urological services including an emergency knee clinic for sports injuries, reconstructive and revision surgery.

The Trauma and Orthopaedics service provides specialist services including an emergency knee clinic for sports injuries, reconstructive and revision surgery.

Ophthamology includes outpatient clinics and adult day surgery as well as paediatric day surgery and inpatients. For nurses post registration, ophthalmic training and development is supported and encouraged in this progressive area of nursing care.

Our internationally renowned Burns Service consists of 20 beds, which includes 4 Intensive Care and Dependency beds, 4 paediatric beds as well as its own dedicated operating theatre and a special outpatients dressing clinic. The Burns Service is also supported by an outreach nurse specialist.

The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Service treats various conditions from congenital deformities, skin cancers, post burn scarring and disfigurement. There is a dedicated Hand Management Unit for the treatment of hand injuries operating within the day surgery complex.

The newest addition to Surgery Services is the Short Stay Unit, a service that has helped us to achieve our waiting list targets. Open from Monday to Saturday morning, it is a dynamic, flexible area ideal for nurses who enjoy the challenge of a fast paced environment and want to care for a broad spectrum of minor elective surgical patients.
