Children’s cancers

What we do

At Chelsea and Westminster Children’s Cancer Services are run on a shared care basis. This means that most of the care is provided locally by us after diagnosis is made at specialist treatment centres such as Great Ormond Street Hospital, University College London Hospital or The Royal Marsden. Our emphasis is on normalising life as much as possible for children and minimising the impact of cancer on our patients and their families.

We offer a holistic service that supports children up to the age of 18 (in full time education) or 19 (for children with disabilities). This includes:

  • 24/7 open access to the wards when a child is unwell – all children are nursed in their own rooms with ensuite bathrooms, as well as on an adolescent ward specifically for teenagers
  • An ambulatory care unit which offers oncology clinics where chemotherapy can be given as an outpatient procedure
  • Ongoing support and care throughout treatment—including blood transfusions, symptom management and treatment for infections
  • A close working relationship with specialist treatment centres and a multidisciplinary approach
  • Macmillan Oncology Nurse Specialists on hand to support children and their families and to help ensure access to the relevant services as and when needed
  • Follow up care in outpatients once the child has finished treatment
