Chemotherapy
The chemotherapy service at Chelsea and Westminster hospital is led by Professor Mark Bower, Clinical Nurse Specialist Shauna McCann and Lead Oncology Pharmacist Joel Myers.
Chemotherapy can be given either as an outpatient or an inpatient. Some chemotherapy can be given in tablet form that you can take at home but many drugs will need to be given into the vein and attendance at the hospital will be necessary.
Outpatient chemotherapy will be given either in the Medical Day Unit on the ground floor of the hospital or in Kobler Day Care on the 2nd floor. Patients undergoing chemotherapy are entitled to free parking in our hospital car park—we will tell you more about this when you attend for treatment.
When you attend for chemotherapy, we will need to do some tests and ask you some questions to make sure that you are well enough to have your chemotherapy on that day.
You will be able to go home following your treatment and we will make sure that you know how to contact us afterwards. We will also make sure that you have any additional medication you may need following treatment.
Some chemotherapy treatments are too long to be given as an outpatient and so you will need to be admitted to the hospital for the duration of your treatment. All adult inpatient chemotherapy is given on Ron Johnson Ward.
Clinical Nurse Specialist Shauna McCann will be designated as the key worker for patients who are having chemotherapy. Shauna will be available to you throughout your chemotherapy treatment and works closely with doctors and nurses in oncology, Kobler Day Care and the medical day unit.
