High risk maternity care

The aim of the high-risk maternity service is to enable women with pre-existing medical conditions, or medical conditions which arise during pregnancy, to achieve a successful pregnancy and birth.

The service is delivered by the high risk medical team, who look after women with a range of medical problems, including relatively common conditions (such as hypertension and diabetes) to less common conditions (such as complex congenital heart disease). The team has access to the latest research and our patients benefit from a flourishing clinical academic department. The team is led by Professor Mark Johnson and Mr Martin Lupton.

The team also includes the Maple team—specialist midwives who look after women with medical problems in pregnancy. Both the obstetric and midwifery high risk teams work closely with other specialist teams within the Trust and in the community. This service can be accessed by clinical referral only.
