Antenatal ultrasound

The Fetal Medicine Department provides a comprehensive ultrasound service for women booking at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. The unit is adjacent to the Antenatal Clinic on the First Floor.

All women are offered an early dating scan at 11–13 weeks and the option of Down's Syndrome screening by measurement of nuchal translucency. A further detailed anomaly scan is offered at 18–21 weeks gestation. You will be able to purchase scan pictures of your baby.  The prices start from £5 per picture.

All our scan rooms have additional television screens so that you and your partner can watch the live scan images comfortably whilst these are being acquired by the ultrasonographer.

Additional scans may be recommended in women with a history of previous pregnancy problems, such as recurrent miscarriage or preterm labour, an adverse family history, multiple pregnancy or if suspected abnormalities develop during the pregnancy. Ultrasound scans are performed by our team of accredited ultrasonographers.

In addition, our dedicated fetal medicine experts Mr Keith Duncan, Mr Guy Thorpe-Beeston and Miss Mina Savvidou perform detailed scans in complex cases and undertake invasive procedures including Amniocentesis and Chorion Villus Sampling.

In pregnancies at high risk of fetal cardiac disease, specialist heart scans are performed by Dr Piers Daubeney, a Fetal Cardiologist who links with the Royal Brompton Hospital.

Scans in the first trimester of pregnancy (less than 12 weeks) required for early pregnancy problems are managed in our Early Pregnancy Unit.
