Services overview
Sexual health
Sexual health is all about achieving a fulfilling sex life in a safe and responsible way. Sexual health clinics enable this by offering testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), contraceptives, condoms, pregnancy testing, vaccinations, sexual health promotion, safer sex education and support/counselling.
Our three main sexual health clinics are John Hunter Clinic, West London Centre for Sexual Health and 56 Dean Street. We provide outreach sexual health clinics which are services based in the community and also run clinics for specific groups of patients (eg men who have sex with men), which are called specialist sexual health clinics.
HIV
Our services for HIV-infected persons include a dedicated inpatient ward, a day care unit, three outpatient clinics (Kobler Clinic, West London Centre for Sexual Health and 56 Dean Street) and emergency clinics for HIV related problems.
Collectively we are the largest HIV Unit in Europe and enjoy an international reputation as a centre of excellence in the care of HIV/AIDS.
Our commitment is to provide a high quality, comprehensive service for persons with HIV/AIDS by working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
We can provide HIV care to any NHS patients wishing to attend our service. Patients do not need their GP to refer them for care, nor do they need to live locally.
HIV infection for many is becoming a long term condition where patients are trying to live a full and “normal” life while at the same time managing their chronic illness. We are working with patients to provide long term HIV care in a way that minimises interruption to their lives. As a result, we can offer telephone or email results service (OptionE), home delivery of drugs and extended opening hours.
Our research charity, the St Stephen’s AIDS Trust, was founded in 1991. It is located in the St Stephen’s Centre adjacent to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and is involved in HIV clinical trials. It also provides short educational courses in HIV and sexual health for NHS professionals, the pharmaceutical industry and overseas doctors, and is involved in international development projects such as workshops and clinical mentoring, predominantly in Africa, Vietnam and China.
