Difficult asthma; chronic undiagnosed respiratory symptoms such as cough, wheeze, poor exercise tolerance, chest pain, breathlessness; recurrent chest infections; obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome; any serious respiratory disorder. Simple respiratory cases, such as mild asthma, occasional infant wheeze and recurrent colds, should be referred to general paediatrics in the first instance.

Children with congenital eye and vision problems, squint, refractive errors, minor eyelid conditions, amblyopia, uveitis, allergic eye disease, diabetic eye disease, congenital cataracts (co-managed with a cataract surgeon at the Western Eye Hospital)

The service does not treat congenital glaucoma, retinal detachment or retino-blastoma

Children who fail the school eye test should go to the optician unless vision is unequal (amblyopia), or squint or droopy eyelid are suspected, in which case a hospital assessment is required

Antenatally detected urinary tract anomalies, hydronephrosis, vesicoureteric reflux, persistent bedwetting, recurrent urinary tract infections, penile abnormality, spina bifida, neuropathic bladders, posterior urethral values, clean intermittent catheterisation, artificial urinary sphincters, Mitrofanoff. Simple bedwetting problems with no daytime symptoms don’t require referral.

Paediatric community services - audiology

 

 

 

Any child living in the catchment areas of Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea, and South Westminster, for whom there is concern about their hearing

Babies who have missed their newborn hearing screen are automatically referred for an eight-month follow-up appointment via the national database, so GPs don’t need to make a referral

Any pre-school child referred to speech and language therapy who has not had a recent hearing screen (within the past year) and children of school age should have a hearing screen at school
