Profile

Dr Harbord was appointed a Consultant Physician & Gastroenterologist at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital in 2006, specialising in inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer and colonoscopy. He is the Lead Clinician of the Gastroenterology Department. He was previously a consultant at the Royal Free Hospital. Qualifying from St Mary's, London in 1992, he trained at UCL, the Royal Free, and St Marks Hospitals. He holds a certificate for specialty training in both gastroenterology and general internal medicine. He has published widely in inflammatory bowel disease and is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal Inflammatory Bowel Disease. He was Chairman of the New Consultants’ Committee at the Royal College of Physicians 2009-2011; and an elected member of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (ECCO) guidelines committee as of 2013. He is co-author of Emergencies in Gastroenterology & Hepatology, a new Oxford University Press textbook due to be published in Spring 2013

Other contributions

He leads a research programme, as head of the UK Twin and Multiplex Inflammatory Bowel Disease Registry, which received charitable grant funding of £1 million in 2012. He is developing an e-learning package for ECCO, converting their guidelines into an educational resource for both doctors and patients. Along with colleagues in the Department, he is either principal investigator or coinvestigator for several clinical trials.
