Deposit/health insurance

At time of booking we will request a non-refundable deposit of £3,500 which is to guarantee your booking on the unit. This deposit needs to be received within 28 days of when you receive your booking confirmation pack. You will also need to return the private patient agreement form. Any delay in doing so may result in your booking being cancelled. This deposit is not generally covered by insurance policies and we do not provide an invoice in advance for this purpose. However the deposit will be refunded if the full balance is made by your insurance company.

Your place for delivery can not be confirmed until this deposit has been received. If this deposit is not received promptly then your booking will be cancelled.

Most insurance companies do not cover normal labour and delivery although in some instances insurance companies are prepared to pay all or part of the cost of stay. Your account will remain your responsibility at all times and we will ask for full payment at time of discharge. Insurance settlement will be between yourself and your insurance company although we will be happy to assist with relevant documentation that may be requested.

If, however, your insurance company is willing to cover your stay then we will need a guarantee of payment from them before you are admitted. This must detail your policy/membership number and authorisation code. It must also state your level of cover and how much, if any, you are expected to pay. If we are not provided with this information prior to your admission then we will request that you settle the bill yourself and then claim the money back.

Women are required to vacate their room by 12 noon on the day of discharge. Beyond this time an additional fee of £100 per hour will be charged. Exceptional circumstances must be discussed with the senior midwife in charge.

For any additional information, please contact the Liaison Officers on 020 3315 8616/8 who will be happy to assist.

Anesthetic Services

The Magill Department of Anaesthesia at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital runs the private anaesthetic service in the Kensington Wing, and also delivers anaesthetic and intensive care services to the NHS Labour Ward and the rest of the hospital. Obstetric anaesthesia at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital is highly regarded and we are a centre for research and training in North West London.

Consultant obstetric anaesthetists are on duty in the hospital at all times. This group of consultants aims to provide an excellent service for the clients of the Kensington Wing. The anaesthetic service includes antenatal assessments where there are potential concerns (eg other diseases, previous back surgery) or where anaesthesia is required for antenatal procedures such as cervical sutures.

The anaesthetic service administers epidural analgesia (pain relief) in labour and anaesthesia for planned and emergency caesarean sections and other procedures. They provide emergency care as required as required for women in the Kensington Wing.

Fees are charged for anaesthetic interventions. Typical anaesthetic fees in the Kensington Wing are:

Epidural pain relief in labour £450
Anaesthesia for caesarean section £550
Top-up of existing epidural for caesarean section £350
Top-up of existing epidural for instrumental delivery £250
Anaesthesia for insertion of cervical suture £250

Some insurance companies do not cover these fees in full and there may be a short-fall to be met by the client. The anaesthetic service is always happy to come and discuss options for pain relief and other matters so do ask the midwives to call them if you would like to talk about anything. We look forward to meeting you in the Kensington Wing.
