Hospital consultant Mr Nigel Davies wins outstanding teacher award

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital consultant Mr Nigel Davies has been awarded the ‘Outstanding Teacher or Trainer of the Year’ award at the Health Education England’s North West London recent awards ceremony.

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital consultant Mr Nigel Davies  has been  awarded  the  ‘Outstanding Teacher or Trainer of the Year’ award at the Health Education England’s North West London recent awards ceremony. 

This is the second such awards event which celebrate individuals and teams achieving excellence in education and training across North West London. Awards were presented in 13 categories, highlighting the innovative and inspiring work taking place across the area. 

Mr Davies is a consultant ophthalmologist, a specialist in medical and surgical eye problems, and is passionate about teaching junior doctors as they learn about different specialities as part of their rotation. In his nomination Mr Davies was praised for his many years as a clinical and educational supervisor and departmental lead at Chelsea and Westminster, maximising the quality of training. Mr Davies has made a profound and long-lasting impression on a large number of trainees who have been privileged to work with him as seen in some of the feedback they have provided: 

“Mr Davies is exactly the kind of person who should be a trainer. He is knowledgeable and approachable. He inspired me like many others, not only to be a good ophthalmologist, but more importantly to be a good human being.” 

“It was Mr Davies who inspired my love of ophthalmology and taught me those essential skills that I use now and will continue to use in the future.” 

“Mr Davies has a novel and fun approach to teaching and always tries to challenge and bring out the best in your ability. I remember fondly my time at Chelsea; it was the best year in my training so far.” 

On winning the award Mr Davies said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have won this award. Education and training is something I feel very strongly about and I feel privileged to be able to be able to teach new generations of doctors and hopefully inspire them to become future ophthalmologists. ”
